From Hardware to Software and to Hardware

There are two interesting trends for the past 10 years for some big IT companies. On one side, led by IBM, many traditional hardware companies have been transforming themselves from hardware companies to software or service companies. Take the example of IBM. IBM was once one of the largest maker for PC hardware, laptop, monitor, hard drive, etc. Now it has sold almost all of its PC business and becomes one of the largest software and service providers. On the other side, traditional pure software companies like Microsoft and Google are moving into the lower margin hardware area. Isn't it interesting?

Microsoft has already had Zune, XBOX, Surface, Keyboard/Mouse, Webcam, etc. And Google just pushed its Nexus One (http://www.google.com/phone). People are talking when Google is going to have its own Netbook or Smartbook (we will talk about them this week) based on Chrome OS or Android OS (http://infoworld.com/d/mobilize/building-google-smartbook-dream-machine-877). It seems Google is trying to build a platform and challenge Microsoft's Windows. What do you think about Google's move?

Smarter Planet Smarter Information Processing

IBM has put up a great commercial on smarter planet.

We also mentioned about this last week when we talked about information processing helped by information technology, using an example on traffic management. The following video nicely demonstrate this.

For us IS/IT people, smarter planet means smarter information processing, with the help of computer technology. You can try identifing the three (or five) components in any of these smarter planet systems.

View more IBM's ideas here http://www.youtube.com/user/IBMAdvertising and http://www.ibm.com/smarterplanet/us/en/. Do you have more good ideas on where we can use a smarter system?

Windows 7 on the Rise?

Windows 7 seems to have performed well so far. I personally heard many positive things about it. Businesses are moving toward it, too (Windows 7 Scores Enterprise Wins). However, from my personal experience, I do not have a strong feeling for Windows 7 over Windows Vista. I have been using Vista for the past two years and found many improvement over XP. For example, the snipping tool, easier wireless and network configuration, broader hardware support, etc. I bought a new HP tablet about 3 months ago with Windows 7 installed. But so far, I don't have plans to upgrade my other two Vista computers. I may have missed something about Windows 7. So, what's your idea? What's your experience with Windows 7 where it absolutely wins over Vista? Can you share it?

Don't forget that, as a CIS 2010 student, you can get a free copy of Windows 7 from MSDNAA: http://msdn.e-academy.com/elms/Storefront/Storefront.aspx?campus=gsu_cis
