Slate PC and iPad

We just talked about the Slate PC (http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/186247/hp_slate_lowers_the_bar_for_apples_tablet_pc.html) on Tuesday, and one day later Apple announced its iPad (http://news.cnet.com/8301-31021_3-10443138-260.html). And guess what: it's only $499. Do you want to get one?

Honestly, I'm not impressed at all with the new iPad. it's a glorified and larger version of the iPhone. It really has NO features the are upgrades from the iPhone. Sure it's portable, but what's easier? Typing on a keyboard for a pound or two more? or finger sensitive screens? The screen would require constant cleaning! it also doesn't have the power that laptops do. Sure its' compact but there are netbooks that have more power. laptops now a day even running windows can have 8 hours of us (just like apple) and batteries will always deplete. The advantage of a laptop or netbook is you can pay for the batter which usually isnt' more than 75 or 80 dollars. two years ago when my last ipod couldn't hold it's battery life anymore apple was going to charge 200 dollars to replace the battery in it. and i would lose all of my music. Not cool. I just bought a new one. The iPad has the same usuable features as the iPhone. We're still stuck with AT&T. There are new apps that can be use with the iPad, but those can be downloaded and put onto any MacBook. So I don't see the point in paying 500 dollars for something that I can get much better elsewhere.

I think this is an overall great deal because a new iphone will run about $399, and for another $100 you can have a bigger product that virtually does the same thing. Even without a wifi connection around Apple has intergrated the use of a 3G sim card. This is a great addition because most people will be using the Ipad as a replacement for their larger and heavier laptops. I think if there was a way to make phone calls using the ipad, via bluetooth of course, it could one day take over the cell phone industry for those of us that want to ditch the cell phone at times.

For someone who has the money to spend on an iPad, it is obviously a great deal. Sure, I wouldn't expect it to take the place of someone’s personal laptop, but the iPad works perfectly as a more portable and compact laptop. One application I find absolutely amazing that similar products (like the iTouch) lack is its e-book feature. Being able to store entire novels in a simple device can make research easier, travel more convenient, and daily life more organized. Of course, I simply don't have the money to drop on Apple's newest product line. And if I did, I personally wouldn't spend it on something so fresh. Technology is constantly changing, and I'm sure in a year from now, Apple will develop a newer, faster edition of the iPad. Although it may not be a product I'd ever purchase, I can see how people may give in to the technological hysteria. And if money wasn't an issue, I don't see how purchasing an iPad could ever be seen as a negative investment.

I really do not think it's much of anything. I have an iPhone and I have heard that the iPad is just a larger version. I love my iPhone and a bigger version of it would be annoying to me because of how sensitive it is. I will just stick to my compact laptop that i can carry under my arm.

Like many of the others who have commented, I also have an Iphone which I only paid $100.00 plus tax for. I could have gotten the 16Gb but opted for the 8GB since I also have a laptop. I agree with Sabrina Lin that the Ipad is nothing more than the Iphone enlarged. The only distinct feature that may appeal to me, it the ebooks but, then I remember I have a library card. Just like most of the students here I am on a budget and even if I had the extra cash would still opt to purchase a Mac computer (which I am saving for) in lew of the Ipad. Over all I think that Apple has a way of developing products that are light years ahead of our time, and because of that we tend to hype items that they market based on the Apple logo and not on the product itself.

I personally would love to have an Ipad. I always want the new technology when it comes out. I don't think that I will buy a 1st generation Ipad because the hard drive is not very large at 16GB (entry model). Also the next generation will have more features than the current model. I don't feel like this is an acceptable alternative to a laptop or desktop. It does not have the power of one of those devices. I do see it as something that someone could have in addition to the previous devices mentioned. It really is a bigger Ipod touch. I would definitely get this in instead of an Ipod but this could no way take the place of a computer. It has the cool factor and if you just want it to have it to read books, play music, movies, games, and surf the web it is for sure the best option over a sony psp or nintendo ds. So if this is why you would want it then go ahead and splurge. But if you can wait hold out for the next generation like I am.
